Each person is unique, and each disability affects each person differently. The information in this section is a very simple overview of some common disabilities. It is aimed to provide a starting point for more research. Use the assessment tools to learn as much as you can about the individual. The person with the disability and/or their caregiver will understand their abilities better than anyone else.
Fragile X Syndrome
The most common form of inherited intellectual impairment. It occurs when the Fragile X Mental Retardation 1 (FMR1) gene mutates. Effects can range from learning disabilities to more severe cognitive/intellectual disabilities. Can exhibit autistic spectrum like behaviours, speech, language, and processing delays.
Teaching Considerations
- Be prepared for a combination of developmental delay and ASD traits and adapt teaching methods accordingly.
