Each person is unique, and each disability affects each person differently. The information in this section is a very simple overview of some common disabilities. It is aimed to provide a starting point for more research. Use the assessment tools to learn as much as you can about the individual. The person with the disability and/or their caregiver will understand their abilities better than anyone else.
Cataracts
Cataracts, a common age-related visual impairment, occur when the lens of the eye becomes cloudy, akin to looking through a foggy window.
This cloudiness makes it challenging to see clearly and may lead to difficulties with distance vision and glare, particularly in bright light. While cataracts typically develop slowly over time, they can also result from hereditary factors, congenital conditions, or exposure to chemical burns.
Despite being generally painless, they can significantly impact daily activities such as reading, driving, and recognising faces.
