Each person is unique, and each disability affects each person differently. The information in this section is a very simple overview of some common disabilities. It is aimed to provide a starting point for more research. Use the assessment tools to learn as much as you can about the individual. The person with the disability and/or their caregiver will understand their abilities better than anyone else.
Retinitis Pigmentosa
Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a group of genetic eye disorders characterised by progressive degeneration of the retina’s light-sensitive cells, particularly the rods, which are responsible for peripheral and night vision.
As RP advances, individuals may experience symptoms such as night blindness, tunnel vision, and eventual loss of central vision, severely impacting daily activities such as reading, driving, and recognising faces.
While the rate of progression varies among affected individuals, RP can ultimately lead to legal blindness in its advanced stages.
