Each person is unique, and each disability affects each person differently. The information in this section is a very simple overview of some common disabilities. It is aimed to provide a starting point for more research. Use the assessment tools to learn as much as you can about the individual. The person with the disability and/or their caregiver will understand their abilities better than anyone else.

Developmental Delay / Global Developmental Delay

A general term that is used to describe when a child’s development is slower than that of other children of the same age, particularly when the cause is not clear. It can affect any area of development including gross and fine motor skills, speech, language, cognition, social and emotional skills.

Teaching Considerations

  • Verify understanding by asking open-ended questions.
  • Keep instructions simple, with single-step directions, and allow time for comprehension and processing.
  • Adjust expectations regarding coordination and understanding to match the student’s developmental level.
  • Establish straightforward routines.
