Each person is unique, and each disability affects each person differently. The information in this section is a very simple overview of some common disabilities. It is aimed to provide a starting point for more research. Use the assessment tools to learn as much as you can about the individual. The person with the disability and/or their caregiver will understand their abilities better than anyone else.

Physical Disabilities Overview

Physical disabilities encompass a diverse range of conditions that affect an individual’s mobility, dexterity, or stamina.

These disabilities can arise from congenital factors, such as birth defects, or acquired causes, such as injuries or illnesses. They vary widely in severity, with some individuals experiencing mild limitations while others face significant challenges in daily life.

Mobility impairments restrict independent movement and may require the use of mobility aids like wheelchairs or walkers. Stamina limitations can result in fatigue and reduced endurance, affecting the ability to engage in prolonged physical activities.

Use the Physical Assessment tool to understand your student’s abilities and needs better.

Teaching Considerations

  • Each Student is unique and will be different, take your time to complete a good assessment to get to know your student.
  • With temperature and fatigue, the students’ ability may change.
  • Get ready to be creative with what you already know. Relate the students’ movements back to non-disabled skiing/snowboarding.
