Assessing a Student

Module Intro

Assessment is about getting to know your guest and working with them to decide what equipment to use, what progressions to teach, and how best to teach them. You do all the things you normally do in the lesson set up but add some extra detail into the student profile.

From your assessment you establish a BASELINE for your guest. This is a reference point as to how they move, communicate, and behave in normal circumstances. For some people this may change from day to day. Recognising this baseline allows you notice if something, such as fatigue, anxiety, hunger, or temperature is affecting your guest during the lesson and to respond accordingly.

Relevant Resources

The Adaptive Instructor’s Manual has two sections on disability, one describes the disability, the other outlines tips and hints for your teaching. It will be useful to refer to this when completing the quiz.
