Telemark skiing combines the grace of free-heel movement with the challenge of dynamic terrain. For beginners, the journey starts with learning the equipment, developing a balanced stance, and understanding how to move efficiently on flat terrain. Whether transitioning from alpine or starting from scratch, all new telemark skiers need time to adjust to the unique feel of free-heel bindings and flexible boots. Early lessons focus on mobility, balance, and stance—foundational elements that set the stage for smooth, controlled skiing. An engaging, progressive approach builds confidence while introducing the fundamental movements that underpin telemark technique.
Check-Hop Turns
What, Why, How
What
A check-hop turn begins by creating a solid platform using a strong simultaneous edge set of both skis, paired with a well-timed pole plant and counter-rotation. This is immediately followed by a quick extension down the hill and an unweighted jump turn into the fall line.
Why
Check-hop turns are used to tighten the turn radius and control speed on steep, narrow terrain. By jumping the skis into the fall line, the skier can stay in control where space and runout are limited.
How
The movement sequence is: check, hop, turn—then repeat. The check is initiated with a forceful pole plant and flexion, anchoring the skier while setting edges. The hop is an explosive extension that unweights the skis, allowing them to pivot into the fall line. The turn is completed with a steering motion across the slope, ending in a flexed position.
A strong, deliberate pole plant below the feet, with the palm opening to face downhill, enhances the blocking effect. The pole strike, edge set, and upper-lower body separation all happen in sync, with pronounced angulation and counter-rotation.
Where
Introduce on steep, groomed blue runs before applying the technique in more advanced steep, narrow terrain.
When
Use this technique when precise speed control is essential—particularly in steep chutes or confined spaces with no safe runout.
Exercises:
- Duck walks
- Rebounds
- Jumping in place
- Pole plant blocking drills
- Jump turns
Progression:
Start with a side slip in a telemark stance. Add a strong edge set and pole plant to create a solid platform. From there, extend and hop into the fall line.
