Getting Stoked on Telemark. Telemark skiing is a distinct and dynamic style of skiing defined by its “loose heel” technique. Unlike alpine skiing, where the boot is fully secured to the ski, telemark bindings leave the heel free, similar to cross-country skiing. This increased range of motion enhances manoeuvrability, particularly on varied terrain, and offers a unique blend of power, fluidity, and grace.

Enjoyment

“How was your lesson? Did you enjoy it?”

Students primarily seek ski lessons to enhance their enjoyment of the sport. Whether they are looking to increase their skills and challenge themselves, improve competitive results, or deepen their appreciation of the mountain environment, enjoyment is key. If the lesson environment is not fun, students are less likely to progress and less likely to return.

What Makes Skiing Fun?

Enjoyment varies from person to person:

9
Some find fun in simply being active.
9
Others enjoy challenges and skill progression.
9
Some are motivated by learning and understanding.
9
Many find social interaction the most enjoyable part of skiing.

Recognizing Enjoyment

Identifying when students are enjoying themselves helps instructors understand what motivates them.

9
Smiles and laughter are obvious indicators of fun.
9
Some students may be more reserved, so check in with them rather than trying to force fun.
9
As a general rule, if you are having fun, your students will be too!

“If your students enjoy the lesson, they will probably take another one!”

When safety and enjoyment are present, the learning environment is primed for success. Managing these aspects to create a positive learning experience is a primary responsibility of the instructor.
