Assessing Sensory Disabilities

Vision impairment can mean a wide range of things. What we want to know is how far away someone can see, how wide their field of vision is, and what detail they see. We also need to know how the environment affects someone’s vision. Things like can your guest see black on white or bright colours better, how does the sun and reflection from the snow, or shade, affect their vision.

We use this information to establish the clothing we need to wear and the best goggles/glasses for your guest. It also helps in establishing the best way to guide someone, and also how to present information.

First up, ask the person about their vision...
If they’ve skied before ask what colours are best for you or a guide to wear, and how they prefer to be guided. Then assess the vision on snow by having the person look at a fixed point while you:

  1. Back away from them to establish how far they can see.
  2. Move side to side to establish their field of vision.
  3. Try both of the above in shade and bright sun to see if it makes a difference.
