Passion for the Sport

Passion for the Sport

To foster commitment and drive in your athletes!

“Passion is a feeling of intense enthusiasm towards or a compelling desire for something.”

If you were to ask any top, international action sport athlete what they are most passionate about in life, what do you think they would say? It’s safe to say that the sport they have committed most of their lives to will be high on that list.

Passion is one of the major driving forces behind motivation and is typically the first step to any form of success in sports. So, as coaches, how do we foster passion?

First, let’s take a deeper look at passion itself. When watching the short surf film below, take note of the key words and phrases used to describe passion. Write them down if you can.

Here’s a few words taken from the dialog in the above video with some statements of what they might mean to a young snow sports athlete…
Connection
… with the snow and the terrain, the other athletes, and you as the coach.
Hunger
… to learn new skills, to continually improve and to grow as a snowboarder or freeskier.
Anticipation
… for the day to come or just the next run.
Looking out for the key drivers in your athletes (such as the above phrases) and encouraging them on a daily basis will help to foster a lifelong passion for snowboarding and freeskiing.

A Positive Attitude

Advocate for a CONSISTENTLY positive attitude towards ALL aspects of snowboarding.

Help them to be respectful and encouraging to everyone around them, and urge them to recognise when their peers have successes and achievements.

Attitude is a choice; encourage learning from both successes and failures.
